California Low Cost Auto Insurance
California runs a low cost auto insurance program to provide a cheap auto insurance option to low-income good drivers. The California Low Cost Automobile Insurance Program (CLCA) is currently a state-wide program. Insurance policies are written by California licensed insurance companies.
The insurance program is not subsidized by taxpayers. Rates are annually adjusted in each county to cover losses and expenses in each county. These insurance rates generally range between $200-300/yr per car. An additional surcharge of 25% is added if there is a single male driver in the household who is 19-24yrs old.
The insurance policy covers basic liabilities of:
- Bodily Injury liability per person - $10,000
- Bodily Injury liability per accident - $20,000
- Property Damage liability per accident - $3,000
For additional charges, you can add:
- Medical Payments per person - $1,000
- Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury per person - $10,000
- Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury per accident - $20,000
Who is Eligible for California Low Cost Car Insurance Program?
- Applicant must be at least 19 years of age or older and a continuously licensed driver for the past three years.
- Applicant must qualify as a good driver
- Have a vehicle currently valued for $20,000 or less.
